汉语水平考试汉语水平考试中国为测试母语非汉语者（包括外国人、华侨、国内少数民族人员）的汉语水平而设立的统一标准化考试。它实行统一命题、统一考试、统一阅卷、统一评分，并统一颁发证书，属国家级考试，缩写为HSK。汉语水平考试分为初、中等汉语水平考试和高等汉语水平考试。凡考试成绩达到规定标准者，可获得相应等级的《汉语水平证书》。《汉语水平证书》分为初等水平证书、中等水平证书和高等水平证书，每等均分为A、B、C三级，A级最高。《汉语水平证书》的效用是：①作为到中国高等院校入系学习专业或报考研究生所要求的实际汉语水平的证明。②作为汉语水平达到某种等级或免修相应级别汉语课程的证明。③作为聘用机构录用人员时，了解其汉语水平的依据。汉语水平考试每年定期在中国国内和海外举行。国内考试在指定的高等院校设立考点；海外考试委托当地高等学校或学术团体承办。中国汉语水平考试是由北京语言学院汉语水平考试中心设计研制的。1984年国家教委（原教育部）委托北京语言学院负责汉语水平考试的研制工作。北京语言学院正式成立了汉语水平考试中心，对考试进行了多方面的研究、设计、试测和试用。1990年2月HSK（初、中等）正式通过专家鉴定；1993年7月HSK（高等）正式通过专家审定。为了全面鉴别高等语言水平，HSK（高等）除了以多项选择题为主的客观性考试外，还包括作文和口试。HSK（初、中等）与HSK（高等）在水平等级上互相衔接。汉语水平考试是以语言学、对外汉语教学、心理测量学、教育测量学以及外语测试等理论为基础，结合汉语的特点，设计的一种稳定、有效、可靠的标准化考试。它拥有一支以对外汉语教学领域的专家为主的专职命题队伍，正式考题均经过预测，在取得关于试题、试卷的难度、区分度、信度等数据的基础上，经过认真筛选，编制出正式考卷。HSK使用的分数是一种标准量表分数，对各年各次考试，均进行等值处理，因此各次考试之间均具有可比性。1992年9月2日国家教委发布21号令，汉语水平考试升级为国家级考试，并决定国家教育委员会设立汉语水平考试委员会，称国家汉语水平考试委员会，全权领导汉语水平考试，并颁发《汉语水平证书》。
