中国社会科学院近代史研究所主要研究1840年（清道光二十年）至1949年间中国历史的国家专业研究机构。1950年 5月在华北大学历史研究室的基础上正式创建。初属中国科学院。1954年至1959年一度称为中国科学院历史研究所第三所。1977年中国社会科学院成立，改称现名。中国历史学家范文澜是近代史研究所创建者、第一任所长。1978年后，刘大年任所长，黎澍、李新等任副所长。1982年余绳武任所长，李宗一等任副所长。1988年王庆成任所长，张海鹏、张友坤等任副所长。该所初建时人数不多, 60年代发展到一百五十人。 "文化大革命"中工作被迫停顿。1978年后进入新的发展时期，人员扩充至两百余人。现有专业人员一百五十五人，其中高级研究人员有七十多人。50年代，研究工作主要围绕范文澜的《中国近代史》和《中国通史》进行。1978年前，所内基本研究单位为研究组，设置多次变更。1978年后，改组为研究室，至1988年，设有政治史、经济史、文化史、中外关系史、中华民国史、现代史、中国通史、国外史学动态等研究室及《近代史资料》编辑室、《近代史研究》编辑部。图书资料室藏书五十万册，以收藏近代报刊及档案资料最具特色。近代史研究所结合国家、社会和学科发展的需要确定研究课题，同时鼓励学者根据个人专长选题进行研究。大型研究项目采取分工合作的集体写书方式。重点研究项目有：中国近代史、中华民国史、中国国民党史、帝国主义侵华史、日本侵华史、十九世纪香港史、沙俄侵华史、中苏国家关系史、1937～1949年的中美关系、中国近代史学理论的发展、近代中国华北农村社会经济研究、清末新政与中国近代化进程、中国新民主主义革命史、中国通史等，主持编纂的大型资料书有《太平天国资料续编》、《中法战争资料续编》、《北洋军阀统治时期资料丛刊》、《中俄关系史料丛刊》等。以上项目中,《中国通史》、《中国近代史稿》、《中华民国史》、《帝国主义侵华史》、《沙俄侵华史》、《中国新民主主义革命史》已有部分或大部分成果出版。个人著作及编、译的书籍甚多，不备列。该所主办的学术刊物有《近代史研究》双月刊。此外，还定期连续出版《近代史资料》、《国外中国近代史研究》。《近代史研究》创刊于1979年,是史学界较有影响的专门学术刊物之一。《近代史资料》创刊于1954年,至1988年已出版七十期,刊载了大量珍贵史料。《国外中国近代史研究》创刊于1980年，至1988年已出版十二辑，以翻译介绍国外研究中国近代史的论文为主。
