文学史研究文学发展历史的科学。与文学理论、文学批评同属文艺学的范畴。它们都以文学为研究对象，但研究的着眼点和侧重点有所不同，文学理论着重研究和探讨文学的基本原理和一般规律，文学批评着重研究和评价具体的文学现象（主要是同时代的作家作品），文学史则着重研究文学发展的过程，总结文学发展的规律，其中包括阐述各种文学内容、文学形式、文学思潮、文学流派产生、发展和演化的历史。寻求它们前后相承相传、沿革嬗变的规律，揭示文学的发展与各种时代因素、社会因素（政治、经济、军事、哲学、宗教、道德、艺术等）的关系以及本民族文学的发展与各民族文学相互交流、影响的关系，对各个时代的重要作家作品在文学发展中的历史地位和作用作出评述等等。研究文学史需要以一定的文学理论观点作为指导，也需要吸收历代的文学批评成果；同时，文学史研究中所得出的规律性认识又可以丰富文学理论,并为文学批评提供借鉴，可见,文学史与文学理论、文学批评的关系是十分密切的，它们是相互交叉关联而又相对独立的三门学科。由于不同地域、不同国家、不同民族的文学以及不同时代、不同类别的文学各自有着不同的发展历史，所以文学史的研究和撰写通常都有一定的范围。根据这种范围，大致可将文学史著作分为以下四类：①是按地域、国家、民族编写的文学通史,如《欧洲文学史》、《中国文学史》、《汉文学史纲要》；②是在一国（或一个民族）文学史中又分历史时期的断代文学史，如《魏晋南北朝文学史》、《中国现代文学史》;③是在一国(或一个民族)文学史中又分不同类别的分类文学史,如《中国诗史》、《中国俗文学史》、《中国妇女文学史》；④是既断代又分类的文学史，如《晚清小说史》。中国的文学史著作，肇始于清代末年，最早的两部是黄人(1857～1914)的《中国文学史》（国学扶轮社印行，无出版年月，当在1900年至19著者于苏州东吴大学执教期间）和林传甲（1877～1921）的《中国文学史》（武林谋新室出版,日本宏文堂印刷,19初版）。其后至中华人民共和国成立之前，影响较大的文学史著作有王国维的《宋元戏曲史》（19初版，原名《宋元戏曲考》），谢无量的《中国大文学史》（19初版）,刘师培的《中古文学史》（19初版,书名亦作《中国中古文学史讲义》），鲁迅的《中国小说史略》(19上卷初版，1924年下卷初版)，胡适的《白话文学史》(1928年初版)，郑振铎的《插图本中国文学史》(1932年初版),刘大杰的《中国文学发展史》(1941年上卷初版,1949年下卷初版)等。中华人民共和国成立以后新编、至今仍较通行的文学史著作，有王瑶著的《中国新文学史稿》（1951年初版）、中国社会科学院文学研究所中国文学史编写组编写的《中国文学史》（1962年初版）、游国恩等主编的《中国文学史》(1964年初版)等。
