衰减全反射入射面内偏振的单色平面光波在密－疏媒质的界面上全反射时，光疏媒质中所形成的迅衰场(见衰减波)能量可以被耦合到金属或半导体的表面上而使表面等离激元(SP)或表面极化激元共振激发。全反射的光强因而会发生剧邃衰减的现象。利用光学中的迅衰场与SP相耦合衰减全反射方法是在1968年由A.奥托提出。奥托利用棱镜的全反射以产生迅衰场，并且由于迅衰场具有沿棱镜法线方向指数衰减的性质，所以被研究的表面必须与棱镜的全反射面相贴近到小于微米的空隙时才有可能使迅衰场的能量耦合到表面上。这种安排被称为奥托装置（图1）。1971年E.克雷奇曼把厚度约为500┱的金属薄膜，直接蒸镀到棱镜的全反射面上,也同样获得了在金属-真空（或其他媒质）界面上对SP的耦合，这种安排被称为克雷奇曼装置（图2）。 由于SP的激励是沿界面传递的，入射光的波矢沿界面的分量与SP的波矢相匹配时才能满足共振激发的条件，这时候入射光的能量可以通过迅衰场而耦合到SP使之激励,而反射率应为100％的全反射光强因而受到了严重的衰减。匹配可以通过改变入射角或改变入射光的波长来实现。反射率随入射角或波长改变的曲线称为衰减全反射谱（ATR谱，图3）。SP的激发反映在ATR谱中为一具有洛伦兹线型的共振吸收峰(见光的吸收)，峰的位置、半宽度及峰值与承受SP激发的媒质的介电常数及膜层或空气隙的厚度有密切的关系。由于SP只局限在界面的附近,所以ATR谱只反映出界面的特性而与媒质的体内因素无关。若是界面的状态发生了变化，例如形成了过渡层，界面增加了粗糙度以及吸附了其他分子等等都会引起ATR谱中的共振峰的位置、宽度及峰值的改变,所以 ATR是一种研究表面或界面光学性质的十分灵敏的方法,由于ATR可以在金属－真空界面、金属－电介质界面上均能实现,因之ATR方法已成为研究表面物理现象的一种具有发展前途的方法。用极性半导体（如GaP）代替奥托装置中的金属,测量它的ATR谱，可确定表面极化激元的频率－波矢关系。
