If his employer liked the idea, he might be given more pay.Perhaps he might even get a better job with the company.

Business had been very slow. So Mr. Smith"s employer thought afew minutes about the idea. But then she shook her head."I am sorry, Smith," his employersaid. "It just will notwash."

Now, the meaning of these English words should be,"It will not get clean." YetSmith"s idea did not have anything to do with making somethingclean. So why did his employer say, "It will notwash?"

A century ago, to talk turkey meant to talk pleasantly. Turkeysin the barnyard(谷仓院场) were thought to be speaking pleasantly to oneanother. In recent years, the saying has come to mean an attempt toteach something important.

Mr. Smith thought of a better idea after his employer talkedturkey to him. He was given an increase in pay. So if your idea"will not wash," try"talking turkey" to yourself andcome up with a better idea.

8. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

B. To explore the meaning of two expressions.

C. To share Mr. Smith’s personal experience.

tter job.

Dear Editor,

The students in our class had a discussion about whether theonly way for senior high students to succeed is to go tocollege.

75% of the students think it necessary to go to college, forcollege education can increase their knowledge and improve theirpersonal qualities as well. However, 15% of the students believethat it is no use going to college because it’s extremely difficultfor college graduates to get satisfactory jobs. In addition, thetuition is too high for their families to pay for. The remaining10% held the view that “All roads lead to Rome”. Therefore, theythink it doesn’t make any difference whether they go to college ornot.

In my opinion, it’s a better choice to go to college because wecan receive much more education. But if we are unable to entercollege, there are many other choices for us, and we can stillcontribute to the society.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
