Europe’s Christmas gloom
On Tuesday Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency, published official figures for GDP growth in the euro area and all of the EU in the third quarter of , as well as unemployment figures. Seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 2.2% in the euro area and by 2.1% in the EU, compared with the previous quarter. Year-on-year GDP increased by 3.9% in the euro area, which is a bit higher than its earlier estimate of 3.7% GDP growth. The number of those in employment increased by 0.9% in both the euro area and the EU in the third quarter of , compared with the previous quarter.
But as Europe is in the grips of a vicious fourth wave of the covid-19 pandemic, the outlook for the Christmas season is gloomy. Restrictions for public events, restaurants and shops are becoming more stringent. Some European countries are thinking about following the example of Austria, which recently reimposed a hard lockdown. Rising inflation further depresses consumption.

针对欧盟国、申根国、欧元区，我们要先明确一个概念，欧盟国≠申根国≠欧元区。
1.欧盟国
欧盟（EU）为欧洲联盟的简称，是一个集政治实体和经济实体于一身的组织，也是目前世界上最有影响力的区域一体化组织，总部位于布鲁塞尔。
目前欧盟共有以下 27个成员国。
欧盟作为世界上最有影响力的区域一体化组织，其宗旨为“通过建立无内部边界的空间，加强经济、社会的协调发展和建立最终实行统一货币的经济货币联盟，促进成员国经济和社会的均衡发展”。
在欧盟，人们的自由流动是其公民的一项基本权利，还可以享受欧盟福利保障，享受欧盟教育体系，自由定居欧盟，在欧盟内跨区域工作。当你拥有欧盟成员国任何一国的别国护照，也就拥有了欧盟护照。持该护照，可以在任意成员国内旅行居住。
2.申根国
申根国（Schengen）就是指加入《申根协定》（《申根公约》）的成员国。
1985年6月14日，由5个欧盟国家在卢森堡的一个小城市申根签署了《申根公约》，该公约于1995年7月正式全面生效，申根公约的成员国亦称“申根国家”或者“申根公约国”，成员国的整体又称“申根区”。
根据该协定，旅游者如果持有其中一国的有效签证即可合法地到所有其他申根国家参观。
截止，目前申根共有以下 26 个成员国。
其中，申根国家除挪威，冰岛，瑞士之外均为欧盟国家，相反 英国，爱尔兰，塞浦路斯，罗马尼亚和保加利亚是欧盟国家，但不是申根协定的成员国。
3.欧元区
欧元区（Euro）是指欧盟成员中使用欧盟的统一货币即欧元的国家区域。
欧元是美元最大的竞争对手，以其坚挺的币值和良好的流通性著称。便于融资，在市场高效流通。
欧洲大部分国家都加入了欧元区，2002年7月，欧元成为欧元区唯一的合法货币。欧元区包含在欧盟中，欧元区只是指使用欧盟的统一货币的国家区域。
目前欧元区国家共有19个成员国。
作为美元的世界储备货币的竞争者，欧元的流通已经不限于上述地区。
